Ancient Puranas say that PARSHURAM was the sixth incarnation of VISHNU. PARSHURAM means Rama with an axe. PARSHURAM was meditator and great devotee of god SHIVA. PARSHURAM was a mighty warrior known for his short temper.
According to Puranas, RUCHEEKA was the grandfather of PARSHURAM who was a great sage. One day RUCHEEKA was roaming on the land in search of a bride. At that time there were two major clans Solar dynasty and Lunar dynasty. The ruling king was from the Lunar clan and had a beautiful daughter named SATYAVATI. RUCHEEKA went in the court of the king where king welcomed him with respect. RUCHEEKA stunned by the beauty of SATYAVATI asked the king that he wants to marry his daughter. The king agreed and they got married. SATYAVATI was very happy with the sage. But she was worried that she had no children and also her mother do not had any son. So he told this to her husband. RUCHEEKA promised her to help.
He then gave two potions to SATYAVATI and asked her to give one to her mother. One potion will bore her a son who will become a great sage and one potion will bore her mother a son who will become a mighty warrior. SATYAVATI gave potion to her mother. Not believing what sage said, mother replaced the two potions. After some time they both were expecting children. Sage found out that her wife had a warrior aura. Sage with his divine vision knows everything that had happened.
So he told her wife that she will have a warrior son. Worried about this, she asked the favor that let her son be a great sage and her grandson be a warrior. Her husband agreed. SATYAVATI had a son JAMADAGNI, a great sage and a grandson PARSHURAM, a great warrior. JAMADAGNI and his wife RENUKA were the parents of PARSHURAM.
In his childhood , PARSHURAM faced a dilemma. A dilemma of killing his own mother. According to stories, RENUKA used to fetch water from a river daily for her husband JAMADAGNI in an unbaked clay pot. The pot was held together by her power of devotion. One day while she was carrying the water in the pot for home, she saw heavenly creatures in chariot flying in the sky. She was tempted by the riches for a moment and her pot broke down. Not knowing how to face her husband, she stopped at a place. His husband noticed that her wife had not returned yet. With his divine vision he searched her. Knowing everything, the sage was filled with rage and asked his eldest son to kill his mother. Horrified by his father"s order he refused to kill. The sage turned his son into stone for not obeying him. Then the sage asked the same from all his sons and they refused. Sage turned them into stone. Sage then asked his youngest son PARSHURAM to kill his mother. Being obedient, he killed her mother. Pleased by his son deed, sage told his son to ask him anything he want. PARSHURAM said that bring his mother and his brothers back to life.
Impressed by PARSHURAM affection for his family sage brought them back to life. Then PARSHURAM meditated and worshipped SHIVA. Pleased by him SHIVA granted him PARSHU(AXE) a divine weapon.
PARSHURAM and his family lived in the Haihaya kingdom ruled by King named KARTAVIRYA ARJUN from Kshatriya(warrior) clan.The king was blessed by Gods with thousand arms which made him practically unbeatable and a chariot which would take him wherever he wants to go. One day king visited his home while PARSHURAM was out meditating and worshiping SHIVA. The king asked PARSHURAM father JAMADAGNI to serve him some food. JAMADAGNI served the king a grand feast. The king asked the sage how he was able to arrange such a grand feast for him. Sage told king about a divine Cow(KAMDHENU) granted by gods to him which fulfill wishes. Tempted by Cow, King asked sage to give it to him. Sage refused so king stole it. When PARSHURAM came home and learned about this whole event, he got angry. He then traveled to the king palace where he killed his bodyguard and the king. When PARSHURAM brought back the sacred Cow his father was very pleased with him but when he noticed his son axe dipping with blood. His father told him to purify his soul as it is stained with the murder of other. PARSHURAM accepted his father words and went in penance. Meanwhile the king sons discovered that there father was killed by PARSHURAM and planned a revenge. They visited PARSHURAM home and decapitated his father JAMADAGNI head and took it with him.. When PARSHURAM returned and discovered that his mother was beating his father decapitated body. Mother beated the chest 21 times. He became enraged and killed all the sons of king and brought the head back for cremation. He then vowed to kill the Kshatriya(Warrior) clan 21 times to avenge his father death.Once for each time his mother beat his father chest. He then committed genocide on warrior clan.
