VISHNU took the form of VARAHA to kill HIRANYAKSHA. After HIRANYAKSHA was killed his younger brother HIRANYAKASHIPU got very angry and planned to revenge his brother death from VISHNU. Like his brother HIRANYAKSHA, he worshiped BRAHMA with great devotion. He meditated for many years just to seek boon of immortality. Brahma was impressed with his devotion so he told HIRANYAKASHIPU to ask whatever he wants. As HIRANYAKASHIPU told BRAHMA that he wants the boon of immortality from him. BRAHMA told him that he cannot fulfill his wish. Then
HIRANYAKASHIPU asked BRAHMA to make his death nearly impossible. He asked that let no animal or human or god cause his death at day or at night with no weapon.Neither he can be killed inside or outside of any shelter nor on Earth or Sky and asked for the lordship of the whole world. Brahma granted his wish. So he became practically immortal. After getting his wish, he conquered the whole world and became a tyrant demon king. He banned the worship of Vishnu and declared himself as the sole god of the world. Followers of Vishnu were exploited and killed. Some followers seek the assistance from Vishnu. Lord Vishnu told them to be patient.
INDRA the king of the gods attacked HIRANYAKASHIPU's palace in his absence.
The sage NARAD a worshiper of Lord Vishnu protected HIRANYAKASHIPU's wife Kayadu who was pregnant. Kayadu was now under the care of NARAD who told Kayadu all about Lord Vishnu. So her son PRAHLAD was influenced by divine thoughts of NARAD at a young stage of development. Later, PRAHLAD became a devoted worshiper of Vishnu. His father was very disappointed with him because he was worshiping his enemy and not him. HIRANYAKASHIPU tried to brainwashed his son against Vishnu but he failed. He got frustrated and ordered his servants to kill his son by any mean. Servants tried to drowned,poisoned and burned him but all these attempts failed because Vishnu was protecting him. On hearing about this demon king got very angry and challenged his son in open court about the existence of Vishnu.PRAHLAD told his father that Vishnu is Omnipresent. So his father asked him pointing towards a pillar that "IS VISHNU IN HERE ALSO". PRAHLAD replied "yes". This made his father angry. HIRANYAKASHIPU smashed the pillar with his mace and with thunderous sound emerged NARSIMHA,fourth incarnation of Vishnu. NARSIMHA upper body was that of a Lion with lower human half. He had huge teeth and claws. NARSIMHA remembered the boon of BRAHMA and did not want to disrespect him. So he killed demon king on the threshold of the court room (Neither inside nor outside any shelter) with the body of the demon his thighs (Neither on earth nor on sky) and opened the demon stomach with his fingernails (Not with any weapon) at twilight (Neither day nor night). After killing demon NARSIMHA became more fierce but when PRAHLAD touched his feet he cooled down.
