VISHNU incarnated in the form of a human. The seventh incarnated form was known as RAMA. He was born to free earth from all the evils and to kill powerful demon king RAVANA who was the king of LANKA, modern day Sri Lanka.
RAMA
RAMA was born in the warrior SOLAR dynasty. RAMA was the first son born to king of Ayodhya, DASHARATHA and his wife KAUSILYA. RAMA had three brothers from same father but different mothers. LAKSHMAN and SHATRUGHN from second wife of king, Sumitra and BHARAT from the third wife of the king, Kaikayei. RAMA had an interest in Bow and Arrows and was good at it.
One day, saint VISHWAMITRA went to the court of king of Ayodhya and requested the king to send his two sons with him to his hermitage. The sage told the king that that they were terrified from the demoness TARKA and her sons who were not letting them worship and offer sacrifices to god. The demons are killing many saints to cause chaos. So king sent his two son with saint and ordered them to protect the saints at all cost.
On the way to hermitage, RAMA with LAKSHMAN and saint were passing through a dense forest were attacked by demoness TARKA who tries to kill them. RAMA hesitated to engage in a battle with a women. The saint explained to RAMA that evil has no gender. RAMA was an obedient son and knows that he has to follows his father orders. RAMA then fought TARKA and killed her. Saint was pleased by his deed. They went to hermitage where saint gave them divine weapons and knowledge to utilize these weapons to RAMA and LAKSHMAN. They practiced everyday to mastered these weapons for quite some time. One day,Saint VISHWAMITRA told RAMA that they were going to offer prayers to god for seven days that will benefit humanity and TARKA two sons MAREECH and SUBAHU will try to disrupt the prayers. So the two princes guarded the hermitage. On the seventh day MAREECH and SURABHU with there army appeared in the sky to stop the prayers. RAMA killed SURABHU with one shot and sent MAREECH several thousand miles away with his arrows. Then RAMA and LAKSHMAN killed the whole army of demon. Prayers were completed successfully.
RAMA lived with saint in the kingdom of MITHILIA ruled by king JANAK. JANAK had a beautiful daughter named SITA. SITA was an incarnation of LAKSHMI consort of VISHNU. JANAK organized a svayamvar( event in which bride chose her husband from different candidates). JANAK decided whomsoever will tie the strings of Bow of SHIVA will marry SITA. None of them were able to even lift the Bow. Then, RAMA lifted the Bow and bend it so much that the Bow broke. PARSHURAM the great worshiper of SHIVA got angry that some human had broke the divine weapon of SHIVA. PARSHURAM visited the court of king JANAK but as he saw the RAMA, he knew that he was the incarnation of VISHNU, so he cooled down. RAMA and SITA got married. After getting married RAMA returned to his kingdom.
King DASHRATHA thought that it was time to give the throne to his eldest son, RAMA. But KAIKAYEI asked the throne for her son BHARAT. Long time ago KAIKAYEI saved the life of king DASHRATHA. So king married her and promised her to fulfill her two wishes. KAIKAYEI had a crooked maid servant who influenced KAIKAYEI to ask the throne from the king for her son and to banish RAMA for fourteen years in forest. The king was heart broken but its his duty as a king to fulfill his word. So he made BHARAT, the king of AYODHYA and banished RAMA for fourteen years in forest. So BHARAT became the king and RAMA left for forest with her wife SITA. His brother LAKSHMAN also joined them. King DASHRATHA died from the pain of separation from his beloved son RAMA. BHARAT on hearing this news was angry on his mother KAIKAYEI and sad for his loving brother. He refused to sit on the throne. BHARAT visited RAMA in the forest and broke the news about there father death and requested RAMA to come back to kingdom and become a righteous ruler. Then RAMA told BHARAT that it was the father words and whether we like it or not we have to obey it. BHARAT then took the sandals of RAMA and placed it on the throne till RAMA will come back.
While living in the forest demoness SURUPNAKHA saw RAMA and was stunned by the beauty of RAMA. So he took a form of a beautiful lady and approached RAMA to marry her. RAMA refused and told her that he is married. SURUPNAKHA got angry and returned to his original form an attacked SITA. LAKSHMAN defended SITA by cutting the nose of demoness. SURUPNAKHA ran away, She sent army of thousand to revenge but all her army was annihilated by RAMA. Demoness now want that his elder brother and demon king RAVANA to take revenge from RAMA on her behalf. So she told all about this to her brother RAVANA and made him interested by telling him that if he will defeat RAMA, he can have her beautiful wife. RAVANA agreed and he then visited the place of RAMA. He tricked RAMA and LAKSHMAN by sending them to hunt a deer of extreme beauty. He then took the form of a saint and abducted the SITA and took her to his kingdom LANKA on a flying chariot. On hearing the cries of SITA, RAMA and LAKSHMAN followed them. But chariot was too fast for them. So they traveled by foot in search of SITA. On the way, they saw a vulture bird, JATAYU who was dying. JATAYU told that he tried to save a women from demon king RAVANA who had abducted her but was heavily injured. RAMA asked for the address of LANKA. JATAYU showed them the way and died. RAMA was saddened by demise of a noble soul but they carried on. Meanwhile on the way,RAMA had a meeting with monkey king, SUGREEVA who told RAMA how he was removed from throne using force by his elder brother. RAMA promised to make him king again by fighting his brother but in return he has to help him find SITA. SUGREEVA agreed and RAMA won the kingdom for his newly made friend SUGREEVA. SUGREEVA send a huge army of monkeys in all direction to find SITA. The general of his army was monkey named HANUMAN who was a great worshiper of RAMA from birth and saw this opportunity to please his lord. HANUMAN crossed huge ocean and found SITA who was in LANKA. HANUMAN told SITA that RAMA is on his way to save her from RAVANA. Be patient for sometime. HANUMAN was captured by the soldiers of RAVANA and took him in the court of RAVANA. RAVANA asked HANUMAN to explain who he was and with what initiative he came here. HANUMAN refused to tell him anything. Demon king ordered his soldiers to set HANUMAN tail on fire. When the tail was set on fire, HANUMAN with his mystical power was able to grow his tail so much that fire can't touch his body. With his tail, he burned the whole LANKA and returned to RAMA to gave information of SITA.
Knowing the location of SITA, RAMA had one big obstruction in his way to LANKA, the mighty ocean. So RAMA went for penance to please the lord of water,VARUNA for three days but VARUNA ignored RAMA. On fourth day, RAMA got angry that VARUNA is not replying to his prayers. Then RAMA invoked the divine weapon, BHRAMASTRA to evaporate the whole ocean. VARUNA got feared and appeared in front of RAMA and requested to forgive him for his ignorance. VARUNA promised to let RAMA and his whole army passed the ocean and advice them to built a bridge of stone. Stone should have RAMA name on it and stone shall not sink into the ocean. Pleased by VARUNA, RAMA took back the divine weapon. So a bridge was built and RAMA army reached the LANKA and attacked it.
Battle was fiercely contested by both sides. In the end, RAVANA whole army was killed. So RAVANA entered into the battle. RAVANA was a demon and a saint. He was a great worshiper of lord SHIVA and was blessed by SHIVA with a boon that a head will grow every time his head will be decapitated and also with the knowledge of all four Vedas mentioned in mythology. RAVANA then went for penance to please BRAHMA to seek the boon of immortality from him. BRAHMA was pleased by RAVANA but refused to give boon of immortality.Instead, he gave RAVANA the nectar of immortality and blessed him that he will be immortal until this nectar will remain stored in his stomach. RAVANA was made invulnerable to gods, demons and heavenly spirits by BRAHMA. RAVANA did not asked the protection from human race from BRAHMA as he saw them too weak.
So when RAMA met RAVANA in battle, wounds were suffered by both. But RAMA managed to cut RAVANA head but a new head replaced him. RAMA admired his opponent and praised him. Both RAMA and RAVANA stopped fighting after receiving severe wounds. RAMA then went into penance to please god of Sun, SURYA to seek the solution for RAVANA. God of Sun pleased by RAMA told him all about the boon given to RAVANA by BRAHMA and SHIVA. He adviced RAMA to first remove the nectar of immortality from RAVANA stomach and then kill him. Next time when RAMA met RAVANA in battle, RAMA invoked BRAHMASTRA and used it on RAVANA. BRAHAMASTRA evaporated the whole nectar of immortality and then RAMA stuck the final blow to RAVANA and killed him. RAM released SITA from the captivity of RAVANA.
